What the Fry Grand Pappy is All About
When we developed this appliance, we wanted to provide a device that fits on your countertop and easy to use. It works on a 1:1 ratio where if you use six cups of oil, you will be able to cook six servings of food. The oil takes about 15 minutes to heat up, and after that, you can begin cooking.
Key Features of the Presto GranPappy Elite Fryer
Size | Easy to clean | Oil heats up quickly | Plug in and go |
It measures at 10.8″ x 10.0″ x 9.1″ and weighs 4.45 pounds | Has a nonstick surface on the inside and outside of the unit | Within 15 minutes; people can begin frying | Doesn’t have a bunch of settings, plug it into the wall and wait |
ADDITIONAL GUIDE
Besides everything mentioned above, this appliance also comes with a frying guide, a plastic scoop and a snap on lid. The frying guide is useful for telling you how long you should fry different types of food. The plastic scoop is good to get food out of the device without getting a grease burn.
OTHER FEATURES
The last feature worth highlighting is the snap on lid, we recommend taking it off while cooking. This is a great feature because it makes it easier to store oil in the unit between uses.
What We Liked about the Presto Granpappy Fryer
- It is easy to operate (no temperature controls, but automatically maintains the correct temperature)
- Includes a dishwasher safe scoop
- It’s lightweight and takes up about the same amount of counter space as a Keurig machine
- Allows you to store oil in the deep fryer for almost no clean-up
- Nonstick surfaces on the inside and outside
What We Didn’t Like about the Presto Fry Granpappy
- Doesn’t have a grease indicator light to tell people when the oil is ready to use
- The outside isn’t insulated well so that you could get a nasty burn
- Some users have reported cooking temps as hot as 400 degrees Fahrenheit (though most report the maximum at 375 F).

What to Expect with the Presto Fry Daddy
When using this product, the user knows that they’re getting a compact and nonstick fryer that is as easy as plugging it into the wall, waiting for the oil to heat up and then just using the fryer. There isn’t a whole lot of insulation on the outside of the product, so people should know not to touch the outside while it is in use.
Users should also expect golden brown food if using the cook times specified in the instruction booklet. The last point worth highlighting is that if the oil is cooled then filtered through some cheesecloth, you can reuse the oil two or three times.
Who Is It For?
In our opinion, this appliance was designed for people who don’t have small children. If you live alone or have some roommates, this is the ideal product for you, because, you plug it in, and after a couple of minutes it’s ready to use.
We recommend not getting this product if you’re the parent of a small child who enjoys helping in the kitchen. This is because the outside gets very hot when the fryer is in use, and this can cause injury to the child.
How to Use the Presto Gran Pappy Deep Fryer
When first using this compact fryer be sure to place something under it, to help protect the countertop from heat damage. Then add oil at that 1:1 ratio we talked about earlier. Finally, connect the magnetic power cord to the wall, and you can begin cooking. Check out this short video below for more details:

What do People Think about the Granpappy Elite Deep Fryer?
—>Read More Customer Reviews on Amazon<—
“Better than other deep fryers I’ve tried and I love that it doesn’t take up too much space on your counter. Very easy to clean, and also to use. I’ve fried shrimp, chicken, fries, mushrooms, okra, and other things too. They all turn out delicious.”
“Fries foods at between 350-375 degrees. 375 when the oil is heated up, and then 350 after you put food in. Some people complain that there is no adjustable temp setting, but this is the temperature that all deep fryers in restaurants are set for anyway. The result? Nicely fried foods that don’t absorb a ton of fat, but the oil doesn’t burn either.”
“Really easy to use and clean. It’s so simple that seriously anyone can deep fry foods at home. That’s the beauty of this thing and why I recommend it to all my friends. What do I love most? The fact that you can store the oil right in the fryer. This is maybe the only product on the market that allows you to do that, and it’s kind of amazing!”
Is There an Alternative to the Granpappy Deep Fryer?
If you’re looking for a deep fryer that’s similar to this one but has insulated sides, and a couple of other features not found in the Presto GranPappy, we recommend the Hamilton Beach (35021) Deep Fryer. It’s a safer version of the GranPappy because, besides insulated sides, it also has a metal top with a viewing window, so you don’t have grease splatter around.
Some would say that because this product hit shelves in 2012, it’s old and obsolete, we think otherwise. It is still widely in use, and we believe it’s in the top five purchased deep fryers on Amazon. Finally, it measures at 13.1″ by 11.4″ by 8.6″ and weighs about nine pounds. This means that this model is slightly larger and twice the weight of the Presto GrandPappy.

Is this Deep Fryer Big Enough for a Whole Chicken or Turkey?
If you’re looking for a deep fryer that’s ideal for chicken or turkey, or even a fish fry for your next big party, you’ll probably want to know whether or not this one will work. Let’s find out!
The Granpappy has a capacity of 6 cups. This means that it’s far too small for something like a whole chicken or turkey. And, if you want to fry fish for more than a few people, it’ll take you far too long to make this happen.
Where this deep fryer does excel is for a small family who wants a simple appliance to make delicious fried foods. For example, in under an hour you could easily fry fish and chips for a family of 4-5. Or, some onion rings for a kid’s birthday party. The capacity simply isn’t big enough for larger cuts of meat, or for larger groups of people.
If you’re looking for something with a larger capacity, then you’ll want to consider the following options:
Masterbuilt Butterball Turkey Fryer (for indoor use)
Grand Gobbler High-Capacity Turkey Deep Fryer (for outdoor use—runs on propane)
RV Works Cajun Fryer (One of the highest capacity outdoor fryers on the market today)
The Takeaway on the Presto Electric Deep Fryer
- Makes six servings of french fries with just six cups of oil
- Maintains proper frying temperature automatically
- Fries crispy chicken, shrimp, onion rings and more
- Ceramic nonstick surface—PFAS free
- Handy scoop lifts, drains, and serves
After looking at the good and the bad and comparing it to another fryer, we still believe that the Presto GranPappy Electric Deep Fryer review still shows the best compact deep fryer on the market. Although it doesn’t have an indicator light or temperature settings, the instruction manual did an excellent job of explaining everything.
Plug it in, and wait 15 minutes and you will have oil that is at 375 degrees Fahrenheit, and it will stay at that temperature while in use. This unit, as opposed to coming with a removable frying basket, comes with a plastic scoop used to get food out of the oil.
We like this scoop for several reasons. First off, we like it because it makes getting the food as easy as just scooping it out. Also, by using a scoop instead of a basket, it leaves more space in the fryer for food, and you don’t need to add extra oil, because the basket is taking up room. Finally, a scoop is easier to clean than a basket, and we liked how the Presto GrandPappy fryer kept cleanup in mind while making this nonstick fryer.
