If you’re never heard of cowboy butter before, you’re seriously missing out! It’s all kinds of delicious and is traditionally served as a dipping sauce for steak or other kinds of meat. However, the sky is the limit and it’s really an all-round, versatile dipping sauce that basically pairs well with any type of bread, meat or vegetable.
Keep on reading for our three favourite recipes. The first two do require a number of ingredients and a bit of effort but the results? Oh so worth it! The third recipe is a bit simpler and doesn’t require measuring—just adjusting everything to taste so if you like to go free-form in the kitchen, skip down to that one.
Cowboy Butter Recipe #1
The first recipe for this delicious dipping sauce for steaks or other meats has been adapted from Delish.
- 1 cup melted butter
- Juice of 1/2 a lemon
- 3 gloves minced garlic
- 1 finely diced shallot
- 2 tbsp dijon mustard (high quality is best)
- 1 tbsp horseradish
- Cayenne pepper to taste
- 1/4 tsp paprika
- 1-2 tbsp chopped parsley
- 1-2 tbsp chopped chives
- 2 tsp minced thyme
- Salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
Combine all the ingredients except the fresh herbs and salt and pepper by whisking well. Then, stir in the herbs gently and taste. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm. This stuff is amazing with smoked meats (Check out our top recommendation for a gas smoker).

Here’s a simpler recipe with fewer ingredients that you might want to try out.
- Melted butter
- Chopped fresh parsley
- Red pepper flakes
- Salt and freshly ground pepper
- Lemon juice (fresh is best)
- Lemon zest
- Minced garlic
- Dijon mustard
Add small amounts of each ingredient and then adjust to taste. Serve warm with any kind of meat. Or, refrigerate for 3-4 hours so that it hardens. Then, serve a dollop on steak for an impressive meal!
What can I Eat Cowboy Sauce With?
Traditionally, this butter dipping sauce is served with meat like steak or chicken. However, here are some other ideas for how to serve it:
- With cornbread or other hearty bread
- On popcorn
- As a dipping sauce for any kind of meat
- Boiled or fried shrimp
